What I found looking around on Elance

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

I was looking around on Elance for new gigs and I decided to check out something new.  I thought, let me see what other types of jobs are out there.  Well, this is what I came across, it’s pretty funny…to me at least.

UPDATED: The link was closed out, but it was a link to a job titled: “In need of assisstant and girl friday.”  The dude wanted an escort that did filing.  Good to see that Elance does some pruning.

New Google additions: Walking forever and a possible SecondLife rival?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

First off: Walking directions!

I already new about the street view on maps.google.com, but I just noticed that there was a walking version of the search. So, I decided to see how long it would take me to go to San Diego and hang out…this is what I got! To say the least Forrest Gump is a champ for running something similar to this. Anyway, on to the next thing I found.

Secondly: Lively by Google

Wow, this looks like some good competition to Second Life.  I haven’t used SecondLife yet, but I know that there is a lot of money to be had online in that game.  I have heard of several people getting big deals for designs and things like that.  Not to mention the many corporations who have a SecondLife presence.   Anyway, I just started messing with this thing, but it was too intriguing to not try it out and write something about it.  You can create your own rooms, I created one for ColdFusion and Flex developers, and you can design the room just like SecondLife.  I even see places where you can make morey off this thing by creating content and selling it through Google.  I need to check out the API on this thing, if there is one, it could be really cool for Podcast and YouTube casts.  Anyway, check it out…you can visit me and my company.

Anyone remember the car Voltron?

Friday, August 1st, 2008

I was talking to a friend of mine and he brought up the car version of Voltron.  Now, I don’t know if I blocked this out because it was crap or what, but I found this clip on theTube.  Pay attention to the number of cars it took to assemble Voltron, holy crap!  They went from five to fifteen, more than double the number of people needed!  Hilarious.  No wonder why I don’t remember it.  I kept telling my friend that it was an obvious marketing ploy to get kids to buy all of the cars.

Sys-con, autoplay on ads is annoying to web surfers

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I am glad that I don’t work in anoffice setting, because I would’ve just gotten some crazy eyes.  I haven’t been to sys-con in a while now, and I remember one of the reasons I stopped going.  What is up with the Windows Server ad in the top right corner that starts running on load?  It runs on EVERY page!  At least autoplay based on first view or something.  I am listening to  some music and bam here comes the lame ad with the audio ramped up.  Am I the only person annoyed by this?

Marketing Folks: Please pay attention to your audio levels!

I just had to gripe about this, I am sitting here watching some poker (I know…lame) and this Peticure ad comes on and is so loud it wakes up my baby and my dogs start barking.  I think Head-On did the same thing, but I wonder how many people don’t buy just because of that.  I know I do, I will never buy Peticure or Head-On just because of the annoying commercials.  Man, I am in a crabby mood today.

Facebook does what we do best!

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Only the finest in litigation!  Facebook, the social networking site that boasts 80 million users, has launched a lawsuit that has me chuckling.  Facebook just settled it’s own lawsuit with ConnectU which stated that the founder of Facebook stole their idea.  The part that is amusing about the lawsuit is that they are going after the German website for more than just the design of the site.  They are claiming that the features, look and feel, and services have been stolen.  I feel really bad for any social networking site that has a job board, profile, last activity list, groups, email notifications, an API, etc.  I also feel bad for all other companies who do anything that a larger company does because you could be sued for providing the same “services”.  Of course I am being a little facetious here, but it is pretty lame to sue over features and services that have been around for a while before you came on the scene.  Now, they sure did rip the ever living crap out of the layout and design…compare for yourself.

Ray, are you too busy?

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I remember Ray Camden would put out a project on Fridays that would take a short amount of time to accomplish, but was a nice little brain teaser for coding.  What every happened to that?  I mean if you are too busy I totally understand, but I miss it.  I knew a few programmers that would run through them when they came out.

PS: I can’t do it, I have a 2 year old and a 1 month old.

I return to the blog world!

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

Wow, I didn’t know that working two projects would take me away from blogging, and reading other’s blogs. I have been in meetings, coding, planning for the past month now, and finally I am ready to get back to the community. If anyone is interested, my business partner and I have launched a new site. The site is FWS Fundraising, and what we are doing is pretty simple but kinda cool. We have a flash family website creator that can normally be purchased at My web center, but now we are using this product to help organizations raise money. I think it’s pretty cool, so if anyone has an organization that wants to run a different kind of funraiser, check us out.

I personally launched another site for people to log on and grade their realtors. My wife recently became a realtor and she told me that there were all kinds of issues with realtors. So, I decided to put up a simple site for folks. It’s called Your Realtor Report Card, I have no idea if it will be used by people, but if you have any good remarks or bad remarks about a realtor…post it on the site.

Alright, now I am going back to reading the 1000s of posts in my google reader account. Great to be back!

Alright, this is the kind of thing that makes me afraid to ever be in court! A friend of mine forwarded me this transcript of a friend’s recent debut in court for speeding. Obviously the judge had no interest in looking at the evidence. The guy had charts of the area and the speed data from a GPS tracking system installed in his car.

Judge: [My friend's friend's name]

Me: Ready your Honor

Judge: anybody who carries a chart to court is pleading not guilty, that’s a given

Me: Correct, not guilty. (We are then sworn in)

Me: I have just one question of the officer and then I should like to present my case
Judge: Proceed

Me: Officer, can you read the signature on your copy of the citation?

Officer: [My friend's friend's name]

Me: Can you read the signature on my copy of the citation?

Officer: There is none.

Me: Let the record show that the officer gave me a copy of the citation BEFORE I signed it.

Me: Describe being “boxed in by traffic” and present photos of the area. Congestion shows no line of sight from officer’s vantage point

Me: Offer GPS data from Mazda

Me: show notarized and certified data from Ty as independent verification, display map that Sheriff loving holds and parades in front of officer and Judge.

Judge: Is that it?

Me Yes, your honor.

Judge: How fast were you actually going?

Me: 55 mph as of the last time I remember checking my speedometer.

Judge: I’m going to find you guilty. There will be some Court costs, and a fine of $76. Total $136. Good Day.

Courtroom: Gasp….

Sheriff: Damn!

I kid you not, the f___ing Sheriff was surprised!
